Chorebox (“the app”) is published by Chad Kanera (“we,” “us”). This policy describes how the app handles information. Chorebox is local-first: it works on your device with no Chorebox account and no servers we operate. Optional family sharing uses Apple iCloud (CloudKit) only if you turn it on.
Summary
- We do not operate user accounts or a server. There is nowhere for your family's data to be sent.
- We do not sell personal data, and the app contains no advertising or third-party analytics SDKs.
- Kid profiles, chores, rewards, and history stay on your device by default. If you enable family sharing, Apple iCloud syncs that data to the family devices you invite — we still do not run a Chorebox server.
Information stored on your device
The app stores the following locally to provide its features:
- Kid profiles — a name, an avatar (an emoji and color, or optionally a photo you choose), and a points balance.
- Chores and rewards — titles, icons, point values, recurrence settings, and completion/redemption history.
- Parental PIN — if you enable the optional PIN, we store a one-way hash of it, not the PIN itself.
- Settings — trial/unlock state, daily reminder time, and theme color.
This data lives in Apple's shared App Group container
(group.com.shiftcrew.chorebox) so the iPhone app and the Home Screen widget
can read the same information. If you choose a photo for a kid's avatar, it's compressed
and stored in that same on-device container — it is never uploaded anywhere by us.
We do not transmit any of this data to our own servers, because we don't operate any.
Photos
Choosing a kid's avatar photo uses Apple's built-in photo picker, which does not grant the app access to your full photo library — only the specific photo you select. That photo is cropped and compressed on-device and stored locally. We do not upload it to our own servers. If you later enable family sharing, that avatar may sync through Apple iCloud to invited family devices.
Optional iCloud family sharing
Chorebox can optionally sync family data using Apple CloudKit
(container iCloud.com.shiftcrew.chorebox). This is off unless you enable
iCloud sync / family sharing in Settings. We do not operate the cloud: Apple does.
When it is on, kid profiles, chores, rewards, completions, and avatars may be stored
in your (or the family organizer's) iCloud account and shared with invited family
members' devices. You can turn it off; iCloud copies then follow Apple's iCloud
retention and deletion rules, not a Chorebox dashboard.
Notifications
The optional daily reminder is a local notification scheduled on your device using Apple's standard notification APIs. No push notification server or third-party service is involved.
Purchases
Chorebox offers a one-time in-app purchase processed entirely by Apple through StoreKit. We do not receive your payment card details. Apple may collect information according to Apple's Privacy Policy. The app stores a local flag when a purchase is verified so the unlock remains available offline.
Data we do not collect
- Your name, email, or contact information (unless you email us for support).
- Precise location.
- Contacts, microphone input, or your full photo library.
- Advertising identifiers for cross-app tracking.
Children's privacy
Chorebox is a tool for parents to manage chores for their own children, operated by the parent on the parent's own device. Kid profile information (a first name, an optional photo, and chore/points data) is entered by the parent. We do not collect it on our servers. If family sharing is enabled, that information is transmitted through Apple iCloud to invited family devices. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children, and the app is not directed at children operating it independently of a parent. Chorebox should be submitted as a parent-operated productivity app, not the Kids Category.
Sharing and disclosure
We do not share kid profiles, chore data, or history with third parties. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights — though since we don't collect or store your data ourselves, there is nothing on our end to disclose.
Data retention and deletion
Data remains on your device until you delete individual kids, chores, or rewards within the app, or uninstall the app entirely. Uninstalling removes Chorebox data from that device. If family sharing was enabled, copies in Apple iCloud remain until you (or the family organizer) delete them via iCloud / family sharing controls. We cannot recover data for you.
Security
Data is protected by your device's operating system and, where applicable, your device passcode/biometrics. Chorebox uses standard Apple APIs (SwiftData) and does not implement a separate Chorebox-operated backup. Optional family sharing uses Apple CloudKit.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
